There are many resources available for Parkinson’s patients and caregivers. A quick search on Google will result in thousands of sites, many that are very useful and stock full of PD information. We have listed below a few of our favorites:
Parkinson Foundation of National Capital Area (PFNCA): www.ParkinsonFoundation.org
This organization offers a variety of exercise classes (including boxing and rock climbing) in Northern VA most of which are free of cost to all members of the PFNCA (which has a nominal annual administrative fee, which can be waived for financial hardship). Click here to see the current classes
The PFNCA also has Support Groups in Northern Virginia for patients and caregivers which can be accessed here.
Parkinson's Social Network:
https://parkinsonsocialnetwork.orgA Northern Virginia organization for those living with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers. They offer classes, cafes (informal fun gatherings), “side by sides” (support groups for caregivers and patients) and educational events, which you can find on their website.
They have a weekly newsletter you can sign up for and all the local information will be emailed to you regularly. Their Resource Page is worth checking out and you can find information on recommended books and on nutrition from the drop down menu on their resource tab.
Dance for PD: www.DanceForParkinsons.org An International Organization based in New York City. They actually offer free local dance classes in Arlington and Fairfax, as well as provide online streaming and DVDs. They have both standing and seated classed to accommodate for all levels of Parkinson’s disease.
Just Breathe (Tai Chi Classes): www.Zen.ThisIsTrueCS.com Although not specific for Parkinsons, this organization offers Tai Chi Classes in the Burke/Springfield area. Click here to check it out.
Parkinson’s Foundation Mid Atlantic:
www.Parkinson.org/MidAtlanticThis National PD organization has a local presence in the DC and Baltimore area. Our favorite feature of this website is the Parkinson’s Library. You can search topics that you are interested in or pick from a wide selection of topics. More information than you could ever imagine, including an entire section devoted to caregivers. Click here to go to their PD Library page:
American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA):
www.APDAParkinson.orgThere are no local chapters nearby with this national organization, but it is a wonderful resource if you are looking for more information on Parkinson’s Disease and research.
They have put out a Parkinson’s Disease handbook and other free downloadable booklets you can find HERE.
You can also find an assortment of webinars on various topics HERE.
