Direct access allows you to see a physical therapist without referral from a physician! Direct access to physical therapy is fantastic because it allows you to get the care you need right away, without the unnecessary delay of waiting for a doctor’s appointment and referral.
Although unlimited direct access to physical therapy care is allowed by law in Virginia, some insurance carriers continue to require referral before they will pay for physical therapy services. Medicare, Tricare, and the Veteran’s Administration still require referral or prior authorization. Private insurers vary. Please call our office, and we will let you know whether your plan will pay for direct access.
Even with direct access, we strongly value collaboration and communication with your physician or other health care providers, and we coordinate care with your doctor if it turns out that physical therapy is not right for you.
