Direct Access

VA Direct Access Law:

As of April 15, 2015, the code of Virginia 54.1-3482 and 54.1-3482.1 became law allowing patients direct access to physical therapy services. You are now able to directly access a physical therapist without a referral from a physician or other health care practitioner! If you feel you have a problem that may benefit from the skilled services of a physical therapist, you may be able to refer your self for evaluation and up to 30 days of medically necessary treatment without a referral. Although most insurance carriers now allow direct access, there are a few that may still require a physician’s referral before they will pay for services. Please call our office today. We will be sure to verify your individual plan to determine if you are eligible for treatment without a referral. Although direct access is now allowed in VA, we strongly value collaboration and communication with your physician or other health care provider. We will also coordinate care with your doctor if it turns out that Physical Therapy is not the right solution at this time. The new self-referral program allows you to start care sooner and get better faster, saving time and money.
